Free Pattern: Cluster Hat - 9-12 Months

Love how fast this hat works up!  Because this pattern works up loose, it will probably fit more like 12 months to 2 or 3T.




Materials:
Worsted weight cotton yarn (I love this cotton)
5mm hook (H/8)
Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends and sewing on flower)

Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
Dc - double crochet
YO - yarn over
Sc - single crochet
Sl st - slip stitch

Special Stitch:
Cluster -Make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook).  Repeat (3 loops left on hook), repeat (4 loops left on hook).  YO, pull through all 4 loops on hook.


Round 1: Magic Ring.  Inside the ring, ch 3.  Make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook).  Repeat (3 loops left on hook).  YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook.  Ch 2.  *Cluster, ch 2.  Repeat from * three times.  Pull ring tight.  Sl st to top ch of ch 3.  Sl st in next st, sl st in ch-2 sp.  (5 clusters)

Round 2: Ch 3.  In ch-2 sp, make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook).  Repeat (3 loops left on hook).  YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook. Ch 2.  In same sp, cluster, ch 2.  *In the next ch-2 sp, cluster, ch 2.; cluster ch 2.  Repeat from * in each ch-2 sp.  Sl st to top ch of ch 3. Sl st in next st, sl st in ch-2 sp.  (10 clusters)

Round 3:  Ch 3.  In ch-2 sp, make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook).  Repeat (3 loops left on hook).  YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook. Ch 2.  In same sp, cluster, ch 2. *In the next ch-2 sp, cluster, ch 2.  In next ch-2 sp, [cluster, ch 2; cluster, ch 2.]  Repeat from * around.  (End on a single cluster in the sp.)  Sl st to top ch of ch 3. Sl st in next st, sl st in ch-2 sp.  (15 clusters)

Round 4:  Ch 3.  Make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook).  Repeat (3 loops left on hook).  YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook. Ch 2.  *In the next ch-2 sp, Cluster, ch 2.  Repeat from * in each ch-2 sp.  Sl st to top ch of ch 3. Sl st in next st, sl st in ch-2 sp. (15 clusters)

Round 5:  Ch 3.  Make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook).  Repeat (3 loops left on hook).  YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook. Ch 2.  *In the next ch-2 sp, [cluster, ch 2; cluster, ch 2.]    In next two ch-2 spaces, cluster, ch 2.  Repeat around.  Sl st to top ch of ch 3. Sl st in next st, sl st in ch-2 sp.  (20 clusters)

Round 6:  Ch 3.  Make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook).  Repeat (3 loops left on hook).  YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook. Ch 2.  *In the next ch-2 sp, Cluster, ch 2.  Repeat from * in each ch-2 sp.  Sl st to top ch of ch 3. Sl st in next st, sl st in ch-2 sp.  (20 clusters)

Round 7:  Ch 3.  Make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook).  Repeat (3 loops left on hook).  YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook. Ch 2.  *In the next ch-2 sp, [cluster, ch 2; cluster, ch 2.]    In next three ch-2 spaces, cluster, ch 2.  Repeat around.  Sl st to top ch of ch 3. Sl st in next st, sl st in ch-2 sp.  (25 clusters)

Round 8-11:  Ch 3.  Make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook).  Repeat (3 loops left on hook).  YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook. Ch 2.  *In the next ch-2 sp, Cluster, ch 2.  Repeat from * in each ch-2 sp.  Sl st to top ch of ch 3. Sl st in next st, sl st in ch-2 sp.  (25 clusters)

Rounds 12-14 or 15: Loosely sl st around in back loops only.  Join, turn.
Finish with chs facing out.  Finish off, weave in ends.




Flower:
Round 1: Magic Ring, ch 1.  Inside ring, 10 sc.  Pull ring tight enough to make a small circle.  Join with sl st to first sc.
Round 2: Ch 5, sl st in same st.  Sl st across next sc.  In next sc, ch 5.  Continue around, chaining 5 in every other sc, making 6 ch-5 loops.
Round 3: 10 sc in each ch-5 loop.  Sl st to first sc.  Finish off, weave in ends, or leave them loose to tie flower on to hat.

  4. Just found your blog while looking for preemie hat patterns. You have some GREAT work! I would like to share with you something I found some time back for sizing. If you know the circumference of the head, divide that by pi (3.14) and that number will be the inches of increasing rows from magic ring to edge of your work. From there you stop increasing and start the length of the hat. You can reverse that and measure from the magic ring to edge and multiply by pi (3.14) and this will tell you the circumference the hat will be at that point.
